Today we started our class with checking out, if our Twitter account (@TallaghtSocial) is still shadow banned(posts are not visible when you search for TallaghtSocial). And unfortunately the websites for checking this information showed us that search ban and suggestion ban applies to our account. 😞 Teacher even had written to Twitter support team, asking why is this, but they just sent an automated reply, that doesn't include explanation what we did wrong or how to fix the problem. Well, not very helpful, isn't it? We only have 2 choices wait until time passes and the ban is taken off or open a new account.
Brainstorming
We also quickly ran through few points for our projects. For example brainstorming-it is a group activity where each participant shares their ideas as soon as they come to mind. Brainstorming is very important, as many ideas might not be as good as you might think. Also we talked about filming where the story line goes like a rollercoaster where midway in the film there is a peak, which is what we want to achieve in our Project videos, where in the middle of our videos we need to reach our goal message that we want our audience to understand. Less is more, what Brian told us, and I completely agree, as if you include 1000s of images in the short video, it will be too overwhelming for people watching.
Social Audio.
The main topic for our class today is Audio.
There are many Social Audios widely available, that have become more popular in the last couple of years. See the social audio channels below:
Telegram- Voice Chats
Discord- Stages
Facebook- Live Audio Rooms & Podcasts
Podcasting( Adam Curry & Dave Winer invented the podcasts in year 2004)
Reddit Talk
Twitter- Spaces
Spotify-greenroom(now Spotify Live)
Slack huddles
Mixcloud (it is like YouTube just for audio)
Clubhouse (they are an absolute leader!)
It's like a liveline that has thousands of people in one room, just virtually. There is influence here, and it is very much about niche topics.
RSS
Then we also talked about the RSS which means really simple syndication, I know it sounds a little difficult to explain, but in the fact what is does is providing subscribers with new content from frequently updated websites. RSS feed tells the reader when new material such as news article, a blog posting or an audio or video clip has been published on the website.
CB Radio
We also watched a YouTube video of an 11 year old boy, where he is on the CB Radio connecting with South Africa. Isn't that amazing. It's 11 year old doing this, I really don't think I could do it 😀 could you? check it out here:
Audio in it's way is very sticky, you stay longer on social media platforms, so it's very good from advertisers point of view. (the more ads are shown to people)
Go time or Internet time
There is a thing called a Go Time, or Internet Time, it means the time it takes to perform an activity on the Internet, also known as UTC(Coordinated Universal Time).
A little bit of unknow for me, on social media word 'Moots' is short for the word 'mutuals' which is a way of referring to people who you follow.
How to Speak so that people want to listen
It is very hard to gather people on live broadcasting, but it's great. Everyone get's a voice at it.
Then we watched a Julian's Treasure's video about: How to Speak so that people want to listen:
Main points that I pulled from this video are:
In your speaking there are 7 really bad things that most people don't like listening are:
gossip, judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, lying and dogmatism (expression of an opinion as if it is a fact). If you want your speech to be powerful and be heard, Julian Treasure suggests to use these things:
Honesty(be clear and straight in what you say)
Authenticity(just be yourself)
Integrity(be your word, actually doing what you say)
Love(wish them well)
We all have a voice and there is little toolbox, in which there are tools for us to use(register, timbre, prosody, pace, pitch & volume). People like voice that sounds rich, smooth and warm. But don't worry if you don't have a great sounding voice, you can train it. Regarding this we watched the video of Tracey Ullman, where she sings a song "Breakaway". The idea of this is to train your voice, take a brush, pretend it's a microphone and sing away. 😮 In this way you train your voice.
Audacity
Then we continued talking about audio editing. Teacher suggested to us website- Audacityteam.org , where you can edit your audio tracks.
DAW-Digital Audio Workstation
All you do is put in your audio track, or if you have a video that's no problem, as it will take the audio from your video, so that you can edit it. In the video you have to optimize your sound level so that it is not too loud.
You can also use noise removal by using sample noise. This feature is great, definitely worth trying out.
On social media you don't make the perfectly clean sound, as this makes you sound more unnatural.
Timelapse video
Brian also showed us some of his videos, where he used a feature called timelapse (also now on our phones called hyperlapse) these are still images taken at regular intervals, by doing this you can show motion of the scene in a short pace of time.
Sand Art
We looked at beautiful, nearly unreal looking sand art by Sean Corcoran, check this out:
These look incredible. For more sand art videos go to his Facebook page.
