This class we started with looking at our assignment tasks:
Project (video or podcast)
Portfolio (blogger posts)
Skills (website, Facebook page etc.)
Podcast sample
Some of the advantages of making podcast comparing to video project-Audio is 8 times cheaper and faster to make.
When deciding on the soundscape (sound and music to create the atmosphere of a story being told), try to think whether it will be studio sound (quite background) or some outside background(more natural sound). Mixing the 2 in one podcast can be a little bit too much, so it's not recommended. See the sample of the podcast below:
00:00 Intro (around 30 sec long, for example, like Pringles, that wet the appetite, because they way these are made to leave the salt on the lips, that makes you want more, their ad even said, "Once you pop, you can't stop")
00:30 Best bits of the podcast
01:00 Setting the scene(introducing the background story)For example telling about Aviva stadium that used to be called Landsdowne Road Stadium
01:30 I/V #Brian O'Driscoll
05:30 Old Commentary Try 2013
06:00 Brian Lenehan RTE
10:00 BL audio footage
10:30 VOX POP(Latin phrase that literally means "voice of the people")
13:30 Wrap up (monologue, what you did important)
14:40 Outro
YouTube to MP3 converter
Find a great YouTube to MP3 converter on www.Mediahuman.com MediaHuman Audio Converter is a freeware audio conversion utility for everyday use.
Then we also had a look on Brian's social media, where last week he has asked for a piece of advice and the definite winner was Facebook. Basically the Instagram story was only live for a day or so, and there was less comments on the post. Another conclusion is that in the first 6-12hours it's a peak time to get an answer back in comments, after that there is a less of a chance to be answered.
Dunbar's number
150 people is the number of people you can have meaningful relationships with. This number was first proposed in the 1990s by British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, who found a correlation between primate brain size and average social group size.
Stripe
We also had a talk about one of the most successful payment processing platforms called Stripe, that was founded by 2 Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison, with headquarters in San Francisco, USA and Dublin, Ireland. Stripe is one of the highest-valued privately owned businesses in the US. The company was last valued at $95 billion.
Our teacher Brian also shared some stories of his past. He used to work for Baltimore Technologies and actually was a "Paper Millionaire" (person who has achieved a high net worth as a result of the large total market value of the assets they own). There is Brian's interview for more information about his story.
The Digital Marketing Mix
Earned media is coverage or promotion of your brand through organic means. It’s a very effective form of content marketing and is also the toughest media type to get. You provide the content, don't own the channel, but the channel has assembled large audience.
Paid media is anything you paid for, such as a sponsored post in a magazine, a social media ad or an influencer’s post. You provide the content or ad copy, you don't own the channel and you pay to reach the audience- it is well measured.
Owned media is content that you’ve created or distribution channels that you control. For example, a blog post on your website, a social media post from your account or a newsletter. Some people add a fourth type of media, social media or shared media, to separate out the social media channels.
Tip from Brian is that you should only go to your paid marketing when your earned and owned are working good. In other words, test content in Owned- shift winning owned content into earned where it will reach wider audience-if earned isn't possible use winning content in paid zone.
Decide on the goal that you want to achieve with your marketing. Whether you want to receive a phone calls, emails, get more followers or views.. As an example teacher told us a story about a Robin Blanford (D4H Technologies) He once said that you should buy yourself a beautiful hardcover notebook(because then it won't be thrown away) and write in your goals, then year later you can look back and find out how well you did. I think it's a great idea, and I definitely agree that beautiful notebook won't go missing compared to pieces of paper, that most people like to use 😊
Also Brian created some cool pictures in relation to Social Media for Business, see the tweets below:
Then we continued with watching already once mentioned in previous classes video of Seth Godin, Tribes. See below:
Seth Godin who is the founder of Do You Zoom and The Carbon Almanac, is an entrepreneur and blogger who thinks about the marketing of ideas in the digital age. He sends really great ideas and inspires. Few main ideas that I pulled for myself from this video:
*Tribe is a group of people connected to each other, connected to a leader and connected to an idea.
*Tribes needs a shared interest and a way to communicate
*There are 3 cycles :
1.factory (you need faster machines, cheaper labour), -problem is, that we are running out of both of these.
2.TV (advertising, mass marketing) it need average ideas and plenty of ads, unfortunately doesn't work that good anymore.
3.leadership (leading and connecting people and ideas, find something and spread the idea in this way creating the movement)
*do something amazing/remarkable
See below the cycle chart that I created on Canva, what it takes to be a leader.
Here's what leaders have in common:
*challenge (they challenge the status quo)
*culture (they now the culture, 7sec handshake
*all tribe leaders have carisma, but it comes from leading
*they have curiosity
*they connect
*they commit(they commit to the cause, commit to the people)
Create a movement, start and just do it!
E-commerce-online shopping-digital sales
And a little about online sales. There is a term called Lean Marketing Lean helps marketing teams focus on what matters: Delivering value to prospects and customers. Once teams decide to put customer satisfaction at the heart of everything they do and embrace continuous improvement, they become unstoppable – increasing not only productivity, but efficiency and effectiveness, too.
Offer your service or product for as cheap as possible or for free. For example have a focus group- your family and friends. Let them try and test your product/service. Then ask them questions about it, in this way you are getting feedback, and you know what you need to work on and improve.
Here are some useful sales platforms Wordpress, WooCommerce(#1 worldwide sales platform), Etsy, Ebay etc. As an example, of website based on WooCommerce platform we had a look at website Lilysfield.ie. It's a very simple looking website with all the basics, gallery and also a commercial side of the website where you can add to your shopping cart and purchase the flower bouquets. I think in this case "less is more", where simple plain design of the website compliments the beautiful flower bouquets and make them stand out.
Clipping a part of the video ✂
If you're like me, and sometimes have asked yourself how to clip a part of the video, then there's how:
As an example if it is a YouTube video, you go under the video, click on the tree dots in the right bottom corner, then click on the scissors button and then move the selected area to as much as you want it to clip, then give a name to your selection and then click on share and embed, this is what I did down below:
It's important to keep statistics of your website, Brian suggested using Statcounter, that will help to analyze statistics data about your website.
Freemium
Many large companies use a business model called Freemium, a combination of the words "free" and "premium," is a pricing strategy by which a basic product or service is provided free of charge, but money is charged for additional features, services, or virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the free version of the software.
In simple words, it's where their services are 97% for free, but users have to watch ads(like on YouTube), and the 3% users pay, (you can pay and you won't have to watch ads).
Etsy
Here in class Brian showed us how easy it is to open an online shop and sell your products on Etsy sales platform. It took him a while to put all the details in, but once he did it, it was just literally just adding pictures and description online. Etsy charge a small percentage on sale, but you do not need to have your own website to sell your products. So I think for somebody who is just starting out and have small business, it's a good way of getting out there and starting point in selling your products. Here is a link to Brian's 1st digital image for sale on Etsy.
There are couple more digital pictures added for you get, check these out on Brians Etsy page.
Last but not least.. teacher as always shares some wonderful tips on how to do some easy little tricks to make our life's easier 😀. There is one for you:
Bookmark all tabs
When you have a window and many tabs open, that and you don't want to lose and have them saved/bookmarked. There is a way of doing it. Very simple! If using Chrome browser, in the top right corner click on the 3 dot button,→ then go down to Bookmarks → Bookmark all tabs or shortcut to this is Ctrl+Shift+D and that's it, these tabs have been saved all in one go. Absolutely genius, try it out and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.👍
