Day 10

Social Media platform Facebook

Today we started our class with a task from our teacher, to pick out one social media platform and to gather some information and post on our blogger. My choice was the Facebook. Check out some interesting facts I found about it.

Facebook is a social networking service originally launched as FaceMash on October 28, 2003, before changing it's name to The Facebook on February 4, 2004.

Facebook's net worth as of 2023, is $320 Billion. Facebook is one of the biggest and most successful social media platforms today.

Owned by Meta Platforms, based in Menlo Park, California, United States. Number of employees-86,482. Meta Platforms owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, among other products and services. CEO Mark Zuckerberg, founded in February 2004

  • Facebook may not be quite as dominant as in years past. But it’s still the most-used social platform worldwide – by far.
  • Facebook has 2.93 billion monthly active users equals to 36.7% of Earth’s 8 billion people, as of November 2022. And it’s 47% of the world’s population aged 13+.
    That’s a 1.3% year-over-year jump, or an increase of 39 million users.

Despite going through a tough year in 2022, Facebook remains the most used social platform worldwide. For marketers trying to reach almost every demographic, Facebook is a required component of a social marketing strategy.

What's interesting is that more than half of Facebook accounts are set in a non-English language. What makes it convenient for non-English speakers is that Facebook has over 100 languages to choose from.

Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp. Many use more than one.

Facebook.com is the third-most-visited website in the world. Only Google and YouTube get more visits. This is just the web version of Facebook.

Facebook is 2nd-most-used global app based on total usage time, only YouTube tops it. Facebook Messenger comes in at number 9.

Facebook is also the third-most downloaded app, after Instagram and TikTok.

There is a little comparison Facebook with Instagram Revenue in a diagram

Video shooting orientation

Then we discussed which way to shoot our videos. And conclusion is that it depends where do you want to share your video, if it is for social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter etc., then shoot portrait orientated. If you plan your video to be watched on bigger screens like TV or desktops, then the landscape is the way to shoot your video.
Advantages of horizontal video shooting:
*Capture many things without having to move around too much or simply make still shots with a rich background.
*It also should be used to convey the dynamics of the movement. Vertical videos can do that too, but it usually looks like a quick flash, whereas horizontal ones provide more space to trace the moving object with your eyes.
Advantages of vertical video shooting:
*It shifts the focus directly to the subject being filmed.
*It gives the ability to most fully convey the scene with vertical objects, for example, tall buildings or trees.
*It allows you to not worry about the background if you don’t have time to clear it or want to capture something fast.

TallaghtSocial Twitter account update

Then we got some really good news- our Tallaght Social account on Twitter got unbanned! Hooray! 3 weeks past and we are FREE!!! 🙌🙌🙌

Geocities

Then we touched topic about Geocities, GeoCities was a once very popular web hosting service founded in 1994 and purchased by Yahoo in 1999. Marked by its once-generous allotment of 15 megabytes and the free (with added advertisements) price, it was at one point the 3rd most-browsed site on the World Wide Web.

YouTube

YouTube has followed the trend of short videos called shorts. As on YouTube this is something new and they want to fight their competitors TikTok. They are trying to promote those as much as they can. You can get a lot more views through shorts, more attraction is drawn to them.

Newsvendor

Brian showed us one of his websites newsvendor.com on this website he has gathered 150 news channels from around the world. He is pulling 150 RSS feeds from international newsrooms over at @newsvendor using @Inoreader, there is a new deal for this first 3 months for 99C(1cent a day). He is definitely suggesting to give it a go. Interesting fact-Google wanted to kill RSS feed as it was very strong competition, and Google wanted to dominate.

IFTTT

IFTTT stands for “If This Then That.” It's a free web service that helps users automate web-based tasks and improve productivity. IFTTT connects various developers' devices, services and apps to create “applets” that perform automations. For example it links Inoreader to your social media accounts like Twitter. That's only one tiny example of automation. If we think of similar companies, then it is Zappier.

Greenwashing

"Greenwashing" is a term which means to clean your company's reputation, by making it look more "green"(environmentally friendly). Greenwashing, also called "green sheen", is a form of advertising or marketing spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization's products, aims and policies are environmentally friendly. As an example our teacher said. The leader of  the Green Party Eamon Ryan is flying to Japan which carbon imprint is much worse than one households imprint for a whole year! Gives you food for taught.

Audacity

We continued talking about Audacity and it's features. Today was-how to move your audio track on top of the music track?
Drag and drop all your audio tracks you are working with to Audacityselect everythingalign tracksalign tracks end to endmove it slightly backwards to get the two tracks nicely blended.
So I started trying it out, see the screens below:

If it is too loud, there will be red peaks visible, which I didn't have on these audio tracks.

Unwanted comments

We also talked about unwanted, spam type comments on our websites. If the website is in Wordpress, then follow these steps:
Go to settingsdiscussion settingsquick editedit poststurn off pings and comments by unticking these boxes.
Or you can activate anti spam through Akis Met.

The content you put on internet is like the breadcrumbs, leaving the trails, animals will find it.

Page ranks

Page ranks are a value assigned to a web page as a measure of its popularity or importance, used to determine the order in which search engine results are presented. It's like a popularity contest. it depends on how much is your site loved, how much is the website linked to other sites. Someone with a high rank can help boosting your website. Marketing has to tell something attractive(interesting). As our teacher says Do something "Remarkable"-something that you will pass on. It is like "word of mouth"-passing information from person to person using oral communication.

 Purple cow

Brian also told us about American author, marketer Seth Godin and suggested to follow him, read the books and watch videos. As an example he told us one of his stories, where 2 boys, while driving at the back of the car say, black, white, black, white-they are saying what colour cows they see passing by the fields. Then all of a sudden one of the boys shouts PURPLE-he saw a purple cow, and then parents stopped the car to look at it. Conclusion to this is story is as our teacher said, be purple like that cow, stand out from the rest of the crowd, be different

See below one of his videos about what it means to care, to perfect your craft and to make a difference :

SEO & SEM

Search engine optimization(SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines.
Search engine marketing (SEM) is a method of promotion and advertising to help companies' content rank higher among search engine traffic. Like search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing helps companies improve the way content is ranked by search engines.

"Mattress Mick"

For your own website, Brian suggested to look at other, big and successful companies, that are similar type like yours. As an example he told us to have a look at Micks Flynns company "Mattress Mick".
He has been doing Gorilla marketing and content. What strategically very important is to go out and tell your story, try to make content that is more live and that will rise above everything else!
